Partner Presentation:

The Chair of Vocational Education in Technical Subjects (BtF) was newly founded in June 2021 at the University of Hamburg by Univ. Prof. Dr. Felix Walker and is located in Department 3 at the Faculty of Education.

Currently, an interdisciplinary team of about 35 people is working for the chair, which, in addition to teaching for education and training in the vocational area for metal and electrical engineering in numerous projects with various authorities, institutions as well as industry partners closely interlocked.

With the far-reaching changes in work processes brought about by Industry 4.0, companies are required to further develop the competence profiles of employees at various levels. In particular, specialist competencies with regard to industrial data analysis and the understanding of business processes are becoming increasingly important. Approaches to establishing the occupational field of “data scientist” or to further training courses are only available in isolated cases. At the same time, there are few approaches for recording corresponding competencies among employees. Finally, the explicit promotion of competencies in the area of data analysis and interaction in value networks has not yet been researched.

The overarching goal of the BtF within the research project is to address the deficits formulated above and to make transparent which competencies a company’s employees need with regard to industrial data analysis in value networks. To this end, targeted research, analyses and surveys are to be carried out at company level, processed and transferred into corresponding instruments for competence measurement. In order to promote the development of competencies in the field of industrial data analysis, the development of technology-based situated learning modules, which take into account the identified competencies of the employee to be trained, is aimed at. In addition, the effectiveness of the learning modules with regard to competence development is to be empirically tested and the results obtained are to be made available to a broad public, e.g. in the form of recommendations for action.
