Kickoff publication on Industrial Data Science in value networks

Development of the research results takes place in four performance areas

The kickoff publication represents the first scientific work in the research project and serves as a framework for the joint research and development work. The publication describes the overarching concept in the research project for the development of a holistic service platform. In particular, the four service areas in the project are presented and the specific objectives explained in more detail. The service areas are structured as follows:

  • Analysis modules and configuration
  • Competencies and recommendations for action
  • Data backend system
  • Collaboration and business models

Research areas are implemented in the integrated, data-driven reference toolkit

Within these research areas, innovative possibilities for optimizing products and processes as well as initiating new business models in value creation networks are described to manufacturing companies. To enable companies to use modern analysis technologies in a targeted manner, the publication presents the concept of an integrated, data-driven reference toolkit for industrial data analysis and its realization as a collaborative service platform (Figure 1). In addition, exemplary use cases are outlined. The implementation is the main component of the activities in the AKKORD research project.

Figure 1: Concept of the Reference Toolkit for Industrial Data Science in Value Networks

In order to meet these challenges, the AKKORD research project is developing the modular reference toolkit described above, which is composed of the four research areas. In its function, it enables the low-effort design and application-oriented adaptation of IT systems for Industrial Data Science. The technical realization of the four service areas is achieved through modular solution modules, such as process models for the application of Industrial Data Science in industrial companies, tools for technical data analysis, and accompanying integration, training and consulting services. In addition, “success stories” including the implementation of demonstration and pilot applications are provided.

The modular structure of the reference toolkit, the conceptual and technical suitability of the solution modules, and their flexible and rapid integration into corporate processes are being developed and validated during the project in the context of practical use cases. Software-based demonstrators and hardware-based pilot applications (e.g., data-based, innovative work system design or product enhancements using Industry 4.0 technologies) will be implemented. The following use cases will be developed within the project.

Detailed descriptions of the goals pursued can be found on the best practice stories pages.

Summary and outlook on further research activities

The development of the service platform in the AKKORD research project aims to support companies in the design and implementation of data analysis applications in corporate practice. To this end, existing resentments such as a high degree of complexity in the application, a lack of expertise on the part of the employees or an insufficient linking of the required data sources are directly addressed by the provision of corresponding solution modules.

The planned solution modules include procedure models, solutions and tools for the functional and technical implementation of data analysis applications as well as accompanying integration, training and consulting services. Further information on the AKKORD joint research project, the development of the service platform and the current progress of the project is available here on the project homepage.
